Seasonally Lonely

Before moving to England, I’ve never heard of S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder) before.  When I did, I laughed. Yes, I actually laughed and couldn’t believe that there was such a term.  But having lived here for almost a decade, I understand now.

I know now how the short days and seemingly endless not to mention cold nights can do to ones emotional being and mental health.  How even the days can be so dreary, just looking out the window will want to make you want to weep.

How little things that can happen, or careless words said in the summer when they days are longer, carefree and bright, and therefore can be brushed aside and deemed not important.  When the days are short and the nights are long, those words can sting you, and wound you so deep, if left untended, can and will fester all through out the winter.

In past posts, I wrote about what I arm myself with to ward off the gloom.  I turn to comedy and humour.   I try to focus on the smallest joys like wooly socks that keeps your feet nice and toasty.  In the month of November, we have the promise of Christmas, even though it can be madness too, up till the 25th, at least our minds are preoccupied about lists to tick off and presents to buy.  January though can be a bit tricky, especially once the decors have been taken down and the house suddenly looks bare.  Thirty-one bloody days of bleakness.  Luckily February is a short one and down here in Cornwall, Spring comes early.  If we’re lucky again this year, the daffodils will come springing up even in mid-December like last year.

Knowing how much I missed the music of my past, my husband bought me a collection of Rickie Lee Jones CDs.  And as much as I love her, she can be bloody depressing (see previous post).  I’m sorry Rickie.  You will have to collect dust for now.  I’ll take you out in the summer.  For now, I’m only going to listen to Highlife.  Ghanaian music always makes me think of good friendships, the sun, festivals, and dancing, even if it’s looking desolate outside.  Enough of my ramblings and navel gazing.

Postscript:  I drafted this post last night.  My husband woke me up about the latest news that’s happening across the globe.  I’m afraid not even Highlife can cheer me up now.  Whoopie-bloody-doo-dah.  We live in such strange times.

  1. I can definitely see why people do get a bit miserable this time of year as the weather is awful sometimes. I personally love winter, and wrapping up nice and cosy – and of course Christmas! Hope you start to feel a bit more upbeat soon xx

  2. I know what you mean. January always seems a hard month to get through and I like to have little treats and candlelit baths to help me through the month. Pampering time is important when you are on a low x

    • I love candlelit baths too, although not always advisable when you have a young child. Unless of course I wait till she’s asleep 🙂

  3. I think this is why I love Christmas so much. I love the thoughts of getting the lights up, tinsel, Christmas tree bright lights on dark nights make me happy. It is after Christmas I get sown for a few months then the lighter nights appear 🙂

    This time of year really can affect people negatively so much. Where I live there sadly seems to be a lot of suicides around Christmas… it’s awful. It’s good that you find little things to be cheerful about x

    • Oh dear. Yes, I just focus on the small joys that make me happy. My daughter does 🙂

  5. I’m sure SAD exists I always feel a bit down when the seasons change and it’s dark morning and night so early. But look on the bright side, comfy clothes, fires, hot water bottles, cuddles on the sofa and movies. And if that doesn’t work lots of chocolate!

  6. I know how you feel, January certainly leaves me deflated.
    I was inspired my Ranji who recently said she had started up her painting again, only my joy is drawing, so perhaps that will pull me through the bleak days of January 🙂 x

  7. I totally understand how you feel. I’m from Spain and when I moved to the UK, I also found difficult to do my normal life with so many hours of light. Now I’m used to it because I also appreciate the time at home and because I like the contrast with summer, when the night is really short! x

    • Thank goodness for Christmas, the coziness of lighting a fire, wooly socks, my love for boots, I don’t think I’d survive winter! 😉

  8. I’ve suffered with S.A.D since I was younger. I think there is something about the Cornish moors and hills that affect me more though. When I lived in London for a couple of years I didn’t seem to get it as bad. But Cornwall can be lonely and meek this time of year. I embrace the sunny cold days and make sure to head outside, but the rainy days really do play havoc with my moods. x

    • Cornwall can indeed look like a desolate place in the winter. I like to go outside too when I’m feeling really down. Luckily for us (or so I think), we have our kids who instantly is a pick-me-upper 😉 x
