Autumn Cooking: The Day the Husband Invaded My Kitchen

While summer is undoubtedly my favourite season, I do like autumn too.  I love the way the colours of the leaves change, from orange, gold, brown, taking long walks, bundled warm in our scarves and hats and hearing the crunching of the leaves under our wellies.  Then coming back home to a warm fire and maybe a mug of hot chocolate.

I think we’re settling well into autumn now, although you’ll never know we might just have an Indian summer … One can still hope.

I’m usually the main cook of the family.  But a few days ago, a close friend of ours gave us some vegetables from a relative’s garden which included marrow and beetroot and gave my husband ideas.  He loves marrow you see, and decided to try his hand at “stuffed marrow” last night.  Apparently, marrow is a winter vegetable.  I never knew that.

He absolutely enjoyed it.  As for T and I?  Let’s just say we ate the stuffing 😉  To be fair though, I’m not familiar with this vegetable at all.  To me it looked like a giant cucumber.  T actually called it a “snozzcumber” (from the BFG), The Historian wasn’t impressed at all.

Still on a roll, today, he baked us a beetroot-chocolate cake.

This time, T and I loved it.

He still has a couple of recipes up his sleeve, hopefully T and I will manage to eat it.  What I meant to write was, I’m sure T and I will absolutely without any doubt lick our plates clean 😉

Our word of the week is Autumn.

What’s yours?

    • I was in denial a few days ago, but the nights are getting a little bit chillier. Thank goodness for the fire!

  1. I’ve finally found a marrow/courgette recipe that all my family will eat. It has taken me years! Love the idea of beetroot cake. Good for your husband, rolling his sleeves up and cooking up a storm! #wotw

  2. I’m with you on the seasons, I adore the summer but then can handle it ending as the colours of autumn and snuggling down are lovely (still rather have the heat, though!). We’ve not tried those recipes either, I hope you and T continue to enjoy (or at least try!) them x Thanks for sharing with #WotW

  3. I agree, I love the Autumn, in fact I love the winter. I love lighting the fire, cooking soup, getting cosy in woolies! Your first image in this post is divine. Snozzcumber. Love it!

    • I’m afraid my husband wasn’t so pleased when my daughter called it snoozcumber 😉

  4. I’ve never eaten a stuffed marrow. I’m not really curious to try one!
As for beetroot, we’re big fans in our house and eat in which ever way it comes – in soup, on its own, in cake, any which way! It all looks good, you’re lucky to have a chef in house!
    Have a great weekend

    • Loved the beetroot cake. He made soup, wasn’t a big fan of that. Thanks, I’m lucky my husband can cook, although he doesn’t really have much time to do it.

  5. Ooh, beetroot chocolate cake! I’ve always wanted to try that – in fact, I have some beets going mouldy in the fridge! I think that your man’s marrow looks very tasty indeed! 🙂

    • Beetroot cake was yum! I bet you can make a beetroot cake look so beautiful! 😉 As for the marrow, let’s just say T and I loved the stuffing 😉

    • The cake was yum. The husband can cook indeed. Now if only he had more time to do it 😉

  6. Oh I’m the same with the Marrow – not my favourite! but the beetroot cake sounds a interesting one – it’s a little bit like the avocado brownies, I always wonder if they really taste quite right ha! Yet to try them, think I should give it a whirl sometime 🙂 x

    • I’ve never heard of avocado brownies. Now that’s interesting too. I wonder what do they taste like?

  7. Hi Dean, I love stuffed marrow, but it would have to be a blue moon before my husband made it for us! I do love chocolate cake too, but would have to try a beetroot one before I pass judgement on that one. I am intrigued though.

Autumn sounds like the perfect #WotW for you.

    • I’m afraid I’m not a fan of stuffed marrow, though I did like the stuffing. As for the beetroot cake, it was yum! 🙂 x

    • Oh great, just great. I’ve always known my husband is “different” from other men, now I know he definitely is! 😉

    • I think (gathering from most of the comments here and on FB/Instagram, stuffed marrow seems to be an acquired taste 😉
