What to do on Widemouth Bay when the Heat is On …

We’ve been experiencing some really lovely heat the past few days in the UK.  I know some may be struggling, finding it too hot.  Was chatting with a Spanish friend last Sunday and she asked me if the heat is too much for me.  I laughed and said, no!  Where I come from, this is the norm and some days, especially in the summer, it can be even hotter.  I asked her the same question.  She laughed too, and gave me the same answer.

And what better way to enjoy the heat, but to go to the beach!  I’ve mentioned this several times on the blog before that our go-to-beach is Widemouth Bay since it’s only about a ten-minute drive from where we live.  This is where T and her best-friend F love to go and do …

Body Boarding

And here they are, the two best-friends resting before having another go on the beach.  It’s a very safe beach to visit with little ones, since there are always (especially during peak season) life guards on duty complete with speed boats ready to use in case of emergency.

The waves though can be a little bit harsh, but all the better for the body-boarders and surfers of course.  It’s best to still keep a close eye on your little ones by being in the water with them too.

Rock Pooling/Climbing

Towards the afternoon, we decided to pack up and head for the lovely interesting rock formations found on Widemouth bay.  Apart from the long stretch of sand, those rocks and boulders is one of the reason why we love that beach.  When you’re done playing in the sand and waves, there are other things to do like climb over rocks that have been around millions of years.

And there she goes …

Just look at how unique they are… It almost looks a face is etched on the rock.

Nature never ceases to amaze me.

And when you’re done marvelling over rock formations, one can always go exploring over rock pools too. This is one of T and her dad’s favourite activity to do on the beach.  What better way to end a lovely day, by doing some exploring?

Have you been enjoying the heat too?

Or is it just a bit too much for you?

  1. Unfortunately I’ve not had the chance to enjoy any of the hot weather as yet. I’ve either been travelling or working, or chasing my tail! We had a quick run to the park the other evening, and it was lovely to be out and about. Going to the beach has to be one of my favourite things to do in the warm weather. So relaxing. Just time to switch off and enjoy. Hopefully get some beach days in soon enough.

    • I do hope you find some time to have fun on the beach too. Hopefully soon!

  2. I have been saying the last few days it would have been amazing to be by the coast in this heat it has been crazy in London I would have loved to been able to enjoy a spot of rockpooling looks like it’s a good place for it!

    • Oh my goodness, I can imagine how hot it was in London. Hopefully you guys found some time to cool off or at least enjoy the heat 🙂

  3. It’s been sooo hot I haven’t coped very well! However I’m sure I would have felt much better if I had been at a beach! We love rock pooling with Sophie x

  4. I absolutely loved this hot weather but looks it’s over already. I hope summer will stay a bit longer in the UK.

    • Same here. My husband especially was loving it so much, and you’re right, as I type this, and look out the window – it is grey and wet 🙁 Where has summer gone?

  5. It’s been tough for me in the evenings as my flat is at the top of the building, so the heat rises up and it’s been hard to get to sleep. Luckily in the daytime my office has air conditioning, and I’ve been heading to the park (and sitting in the shade) to enjoy my lunch!

    • OH dear, I can imagine how hot is it in your flat. Good to know you have AC in your office and park nearby to cool down 🙂

  6. These are great tips. I’ve never been but would have loved to have been near the sea during the heatwave. x

    • If ever you find yourself in the North Cornish coast, Widemouth bay is an absolute must-visit 🙂

  7. I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again – you really do live in the most beautiful of places! Widemouth Bay looks and sounds amazing. I can’t remember the last time I went rock pooling, and I can’t wait to do it with Pickle when he’s old enough!

    • Indeed, and admittedly, most of us who live here, do take it for granted. And we’re reminded of this all the time, especially when we have visitors stay over 😉

  8. I love the heat and the beach is the best place to cool off – nothing beats a cooling paddle

  9. Widemouth really is a beautiful beach, Amber who works here used to go there regularly and always sings it’s praises. T looks so smart in her wetsuit, I bet she’s getting awesome at her body boarding now! Rock climbing looks great too, Jed would love to visit and climb some of those bigger rocks, looks like a real challenge.

  10. We love Widemouth Bay, such a great place for kids to explore. Not been for a while but would love to go back soon.

  11. Rock pooling is one of the best adventures when you visit a beach. It has always been a firm favourite in our house and we often find we lose track of time when we find interesting rock pools. #CountryKids

  12. Those rocks looks so cool and full of colour. I love exploring and my daughter has started to love it too. This looks a great place to explore #CountryKids

  13. We missed out on the heat wave, being a little too far north. Having said that, a sunny day at the beach can’t be beat!

    • Oh no… Actually, I’m not so sure whether that’s a good or bad thing 😉 We loved it, but I know there were others who really struggled.

  14. I agree with you that nature is fantastic and it’s great that the beach is so close to you. I’m surprised my hubby isn’t more used to the sun coming from France but the north seems to be rather like England. #CountryKids

  15. Monkey loves rock pooling and if we ask him which beach he would like to visit he will always ask for one with rock pools he loves exploring them so much. We have never visited this one before but it looks brilliant. Love the body boarding too. #CountryKids

    • I’m sure you guys will also love Widemouth Bay. It’s perfect for little ones, and grown-ups as well.

  16. When it’s not there is nothing nicer than going to the beach. I used to love spending hours finding rock pools and marvelling at the nature you can find on our beaches.
